How to Ollie on a Skateboard

December 19, 2022

Skateboarding is a thrilling and popular activity that has been around for many decades. One of the most basic and essential skateboarding skills is the ollie. An ollie is a trick that allows a skateboarder to jump and elevate the board off the ground without using their hands. It is an important foundation trick that can be used to perform more advanced maneuvers, like kickflips and heelflips.

Learning how to ollie may seem daunting at first, but with some practice and patience, anyone can master it. In this blog post, we will take you through the steps to ollie on a skateboard.

Step 1: Foot Placement

Before attempting an ollie, make sure your feet are in the correct position. Place your back foot on the tail of the skateboard, and your front foot just behind the front truck bolts. Keep your feet perpendicular to the board and about shoulder-width apart.

Step 2: Crouch and Bend

Bend your knees and crouch down, keeping your weight centered over the board. As you crouch, focus on compressing the board by pushing down with your back foot, and keep your front foot near the center of the board.

Step 3: Pop the Tail

Using your back foot, pop the tail of the skateboard by snapping it down towards the ground. This action will create an upward motion for the board.

Step 4: Slide Your Front Foot

As you pop the tail, slide your front foot forward and upward towards the nose of the skateboard. This sliding motion should be done at a 45-degree angle towards the front of the board.

Step 5: Jump and Level the Board

As your front foot reaches the peak of its slide, jump off the ground and level the board out by bringing your feet together. Make sure to keep your eyes focused on the landing spot.

Step 6: Land and Roll Away

Finally, land with your knees bent and roll away smoothly. Try to land with your weight centered over the board to maintain balance.

Remember, mastering the ollie takes practice and perseverance. It may take some time before you can ollie consistently, so don’t get discouraged. Keep practicing, and with time, you’ll be able to ollie higher and with more style.

In conclusion, the ollie is a fundamental skateboarding trick that every skateboarder should learn. With the right foot placement, crouch, pop, slide, jump, and level, you can easily master this trick. Always wear protective gear like helmets, knee and elbow pads, and wrist guards when skateboarding to avoid any injuries. Happy skateboarding!
